The name is Watson, Joan Watson. Lucy Liu is set to play Sherlock Holmes’ sidekick in CBS’ drama pilot Elementary, whose tweaks to Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic include switching Watson’s gender to female.
Pretty excited about this. Radically different is good in a sea of a million Holmes adaptations.

I’ll admit, I’m pretty excited about how Elementary will come out.
Casting Lucy Liu as Watson is pretty radical. And radical (given the current popularity of all things Sherlock Holmes) is always good if one wishes to stand out among a sea of critically-acclaimed adaptations. So good move for CBS.
And if it ends up failing miserably, we’ll all just laugh, shrug, and forget.
